About the event

Long before COVID-19 struck, India’s economy was in the midst of a severe downturn. Last year, the lockdown plunged the economy into a recession. Worst hit were small businesses, migrant labourers and sectors such as travel, tourism, hospitality, transport and construction.

On the flip side, a massive digitalization surge overtook the country, with active users in the country at an all-time high of 50%. India added a dozen startups to the coveted unicorn club. The market capitalization of listed companies jumped 60% from April 2020 to April 2021.

The Government’s quick measures to save both lives and livelihoods – adequate coverage of vaccines, localized lockdowns, uninterrupted transport of essential goods-played a significant role, and flagship policies such as the Enhanced Trade Partnership promise to play a key role in promoting international businesses to bolster the necessary job creation, innovation, and manufacturing.

In this Let’s Talk Policy session, we discussed about the critical considerations for restarting the economy with stalwarts from Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) – Shobana Kamineni, Past President, CII & Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals, Dr. Naushad Forbes, Former President, CII & Co-Chairman, Forbes Marshall Pvt. Ltd., CK Ranganathan, Chairman, Cll Southern Region & Chairman, CavinKare Ltd., and B Santhanam, Former Chairman, CII & Chairman and MD, Saint Gobain India Pvt. Ltd.

The event was moderated by renowned journalist, Nidhi Razdan.

‘Let’s Talk Policy’ is a panel discussion series initiated by Kautilya School of Public Policy, that brings forth a select group of panellists, sharing differing views on key issues of national and global relevance, and building the dialogue into a conversation for the student community.

The series aims to unravel major themes around democracy, politics, and human rights, and explore the challenges and rewards of implementing practices. We aim to create a cohesive platform and call on thematic experts to foster a healthy dialogue around the most-pressing issues.
